Fashion Design: End of Course Reflection
Architecture, travel, and the human body create a sense of inspiration for her. It influences her work in so many ways: the colors, the fabrics, the shapes, and the designs. These images reflected from her eyes will never express the pure love she has for attire, for fashion. Her personal style is a divergent interpretation of who she is as person. One day she feels like wearing jeans, a tee, and sneakers. Other days she feels like wearing dress pants, flats, and a top. But most days she mixes these to create an outfit of her own. It tells people that her personality is different--different enough to make people more interested in her soul. She dresses herself to Coco Chanel’s mindset: “Dress shabbily, they notice the dress, dress impeccably, they notice the woman”.
I have loved fashion since I was a little girl. My parents have unappreciated it since I was a little girl. It isn't that they didn’t appreciate my love for fashion (they actually supported me), but rather my behavior. They would spend their time buying Bratz dolls, just to find out I was cutting all of their clothes up, just so I could make my own. I would take clothing I’d see laying around and cut up small squares and (attempt to) hand sew. Never did I think about even drawing my future designs on paper, everything was in my mind. Until I arrived at middle school and I starting talking actual art classes and learning more about fashion. I didn’t pay much mind to this or even tried to draw, because I knew my designs were cute! I then arrived at high school and realized a fashion designer designs. This course gave me more confidence to be able to put my own ideas on paper, even though they weren't as solid.
I always had a small problem working in groups, never a big one. It can sometimes be difficult for many people to agree on one thing. But, for our first project we were put into groups of about 10. We all had to figure out what we wanted to design. Some wanted to make dresses, shirts, pants, or vests and here I wanted to make something complete different from the basics. We all decided on a dress, when I didn’t agree with the idea. Then, when we were then told to work independently and hand sew a sketch of our own, I was excited. That is all I ever wanted. To design articles of clothing on my own. Nobody telling me what looks out-of-style or tacky. I then learned, I didn’t mind working in groups for my core classes. On the contrary, when I get to be my own follower and own leader, I feel like the world of fashion is in my hands.
I would have never thought of working with paper and only paper to make a piece of clothing. I always knew that clothing should be UNIQUE. Meaning, clothing can be made out of most objects on this earth. The important thing is you have some type of meaning behind it, whether you can explain it or (even better) you can’t.
