Mid-Year SEDuring the first semester of Born to Run, we planned a complimentary breakfast for the sponsors of the Born to Run 5k Race. It was a great experience to give back to those who donated money to the race. The planning of the breakfast was well thought through and extremely organized, that is one thing that went well. We had stations for drinks and for the actual food. The food also tasted great! The only obstacle we had was that in the beginning, the stoves weren’t all working and were not turning on. In the end, we found a solution and everything turned out great. I’ve noticed, as a class we are great at organizing things because not only was the breakfast well organized, I can tell that the race will be organized as well.
This class is not only strengthening my knowledge but organization skills, but it is also strengthening my knowledge as a runner. I am an athlete and do Track and Field, so I took this class, thinking it will be easy for me, but I thought wrong. In this class I demonstrated collaboration in this class in order to work with other people effectively in order to plan events such as the breakfast and the race. I need to improve on integrity which is moral uprightness. It is not a hard class, but it is challenging in terms of health. As a runner, I learned that I need to improve the distances that I run since I am only a sprinter and am not used to long distances. I also gained knowledge of my heart. I learned that because my heart rate went quickly down to my recovery time (went down in less than 2 minutes), I am a healthy person, and in shape. Knowing this information can help you figure out goals for you body so that you can become a healthier person that before. A run that I attended was one I did with my dad a few years ago for leukemia. It was held at night, with balloons that lit up. I met kids my age who were survivors of leukemia and talked about their experience. It was a good time to be able to bond with the warriors who battled such a horrible cancer in their teenage years. I did not yet meet my goal for this class, which is to run 4 laps around the track without stopping. I am working on this during practice and in class, so that way I can achieve my goal before the end of the class year. I need to improve on the habit of mind, zest. I do show lots of enthusiasm in the class, but it isn’t real enthusiasm. Furthermore, I am hoping that this years Born to Race is better than last years! I’m looking forward to having the whole school go so that we can all bond. I am also hoping that students bring their family members, friends, and loved ones, so that we can all share a great bond within our own small community. |
EOCRMy habit of mind strengths are Collaboration and Wellness. At first, collaboration was my greatest weakness. I did not work well with others, due to my lack of patience. I felt the need to always be the leader that does not listen to others ideas. But, this year, Born to Run has helped me fix this problem. I was in a group for my committee with two other people who each had rather unique ideas. It was hard to combine all of our ideas into one, but it was done with LOTS of patience. I showed wellness by taking this class, as well as also doing Track and Field. I did not run at all times because I was never actually prepared for class, but I did run outside the class time.
Even though I am beginning to blossom with demonstrating Blackstone’s habits of mind in my classes, I have the rest of Habits of Minds to work on. I need to strongly continue to work on Zest since I sometimes tend to keep to myself and I noticed I sometimes don’t participate in class. I noticed I talked in class more than I should have been. In the end, we found a solution and everything turned out great. I contributed to trying to get everything in order and make everything perfect, and it did! I’ve noticed, as a class we are great at organizing events because not only was the breakfast well organized, but the race was organized as well. Since it was at Blackstone this year, I went much better than last years. Despite this strength, as I said before, running was a challenge for me. Not because I didn't want to, I just couldn't for many reasons. My coach does not like for the team to run on the boulevard, especially me who was injured from shin splints. When the class went to the track, I was not prepared. I clearly have expectations for moving forward. This class is not only strengthening my knowledge but organization skills, but it is also strengthening my knowledge as a runner. Since I am an athlete I took this class, thinking it would be easy for me, but I thought wrong. Looking on to the future, I hope to continue running, because this class taught me that running isn't just running. It is medicine for the body. |
