Geometry
EOC
Geometry, for me, was an engaging class. Because of its math diversity, there were times I hated the criteria being taught, and times I that loved it. My favorite part of Geometry was learning about triangles; using my knowledge of Area, Trigonometric Ratios, and the Pythagorean Theorem. My favorite math subject has always been Algebra. Chapter 11: Similarity, which consisted of proportions with area and volume, reminded me of when I took Brian Webb's Algebra 1 class. Geometry, as a whole, has clearly expanded my understanding of Algebra, thus creating a more successful future for me when I take Algebra 2. Geometry has also expanded my understanding of the math world, and how math is used on a daily basis.
Despite my love for Geometry, I absolutely hated Volume. Now, Volume is less difficult for me, but not at the moment it was being taught. For some reason, I was not able to keep up with the formulas and when to divide by 3 or not to divide at all. Of course now I know that you should only divide by 3 when you are finding the volume for a cone and pyramid. But, then, that was difficult for me to grasp. Proportions with Volume were even worse for me! The chart that Marilyn gave us was truly helpful, but for some reason I was not able to figure out with the cube root or when to cube. My understanding of Volume itself is better than before, but I still have trouble with the Proportions of Volume.
In the beginning of the year, Geometry was rather difficult since it was a pretty big transition for me; from algebra to shapes. When our first homework of the night was to watch a video, I thought, “Oh God. Not some online school thing.” But, believe it or not, when I started watching the videos, I knew Geometry wasn’t going to be as difficult as I imagined. I love how it is a video, so you can actually pause or rewind, in case you missed or do not understand what you are learning. Personally, I can be a fast learner, but I can also be a slow learner, so having the power to control how fast or slow the lesson is, was amazing for me! Another tool used was Sketchpad. Sketchpad allows the teacher to teach in a deep and visual way. It helped me see examples of math problems and see the mistakes that many students make. I enjoyed it even more when I was able to use Sketchpad myself to investigate a conjecture. The last tool I found extremely helpful was Remind101. It let Marilyn remind forgetful students, like myself, about a homework assignment or a test to study for, through a text message or an email. Geometry is not the easiest math subject in the world, but with these tools, I noticed that Geometry is not the hardest either.
