Facing History has made me learn the traits in order to become a better student by being a leader in classes other than this class. In this class, I have demonstrated most of the habits of mind, proving that I have grown into a leader. I can say in many days of our classes, I would lead when my peers were off task, contribute in group discussions, and learned from everyone in each of our activities. Zest can tie to this trait because of my enthusiasm in class. I feel as if I have many unique ideas and share them for each of our events. I have demonstrated optimism, knowing that with effort my life and community can get better, which is what Facing History is mostly about. Upstanderness as well when I had to right a wrong, even when afraid, in front of the BACS community on homophobia for the first time. I have also demonstrated others such as Community Engagement and Integrity.
Because most of our work is done in groups or as a whole class I noticed that something that was difficult for me to grip was collaboration. I’ve always had trouble working with other people, but that has definitely has improved since when I first started the class. I tend to have my own unique ideas, that most times always work out, but when someone in the group is off task repeatedly I get a little aggravated, but then I realize that working in a group will never be perfect and there will always be flaws Something else had trouble with was presenting for the first time to each class as a student facilitator on mix it up day. It was the first time I was in charge of a whole class and since they were freshmen, many of them were off task. It was hard for me to keep them at task even though at the end, we all got done what had to be done. In the future I do plan on repeating this class because it helps me with my fright in front groups of people. These events have helped me realize that I am a shy speaker in front of people but when I am comfortable, I steal the spotlight.
This class will clearly help me in the future since it has played a big role in help with my stage fright. It has also taught me to become a leader in todays society, thus proving me that one person can make a difference in peoples lives whether it is a big or a small one. Our class each wrote to Sandy Hook children using an image that brings their mood up. Each drawing compiled to become a book. This was an example that a small act of kindness can make a big difference. Just a drawing or a quote bought up a child’s mood and perhaps may even inspired them.
