Project Earth End of Course Reflection
A problem facing the environment that we have learned about is that there are not enough farmers in today’s generation. In the United States, less than 2% of the population are farmers. This is a big issue today because with no farmers, there is no food and we cannot live off artificial foods, and even that needs corn which is produced with the help of farmers and without farmers there would be no corn! Without farmers we wouldn’t have milk, eggs, or meat to feed ourselves. Another problem facing our environment would be global warming. Global warming is the increase of the atmospheres temperature causing to melt ice caps in the North Pole, which cases the sea levels to rise. We all know what causes global warming such as littering and toxins & chemicals let into the air. But, some of us do not know what is the end result of global warming. Global warming can destroy the homes of the many antarctic animals such as polar bears, penguins, and seals. This can also affect as in many ways! For example, Antarctica has 70% of the worlds freshest water as frozen ice! Global warming was a solution we discussed and we continue trying to prevent it from getting worse by helping Gallego Court’s community garden, spreading awareness among Blackstone Academy Charter School, and improving our schools recycling. We have started to recycle a lot of bottles and cans now, which will really make a difference in the schools recycling performance. Throughout the weeks, I have started to recycle more and I think it’s because this class has taught me a lot about the earth’s existence. I used to throw away old projects and notebooks into the trash but, now it is a habit of bringing it outside to my recycling bin in my garage. As a class we keep spreading awareness and now the Blackstone Academy community is becoming greener as well! |
Project Recycling at BACS
What was the recycling system like at Blackstone before our project? The recycling system at Blackstone wasn't that good. I feel as if we weren't recycling as much as we could. I would pass by the recycling bins and only see nearly 3 sheets of paper and when I looked into the trash I would see the whole thing filled with paper that could have filled up the entire recycling bin! Sometimes I would get annoyed because it was an excessive amount of paper in the trash that should have been in the recycling bin. What was our project proposal? What exactly did we want to do to improve recycling at Blackstone? The proposal for Project Earth was to come up with enough ideas to reduce the amount of wasted recyclables at Blackstone. We announced to the school that there are many things we can recycle such as textbooks, paper of course, construction paper, phone books & all types of notebooks even with the spiral metal and more. The thing was the school was surprised to know all these things were getting thrown into the trash and not being recycled because they thought they weren't allowed to recycle these objects. We also came up with a plan to recycle plastic and bottles. We use a “paper recycling data collection” table and write down the amount of paper, bottles, and cardboard collected that same day and the number of bags. We noticed that in the beginning of the year, only 3.5 lbs. of paper has been recycled at Blackstone. Throughout the months we've collect as much as 85 lbs.! What steps did we take to accomplish this goal? What was your role in each step? We aren't done with our goal, but have reached part of it. We came up with ideas as a class to improve the recycling at Blackstone Academy Charter School. We made interactive presentations to present at morning meeting with pictures of the things we could and couldn't recycle and the school had to shout out if we could or couldn't recycle the objects shown in the pictures. We made flyers to tape on all the walls in the school which reminded the students to recycle and what to recycle! We told our friends and word spread around BACS. We also were the ones who collected the recycling. We’d weigh the bags of paper every week and by the time we knew it our recycling had increased from 3.5 pounds on the first week to up to 85 pounds of paper! The role I took was sort of like a bird’s wing. There to make it fly. I was always there listening, planning, giving ideas, and participating. I was more of an artistic person rather than the social person. By this I mean I’d like to design slides and posters instead of calling resources or talking to staff in the school that would help us. For next semester, I will try to become more of a social person because I feel as if I need to practice my social skills especially because my dream career as a lawyer will have to do a lot with socializing with other people. Has our project been successful? Why or why not? How do you know? Our project so far has been very successful because our goal was to increase recycling in Blackstone and it has increased a lot. Again, from 3.5 pounds a week to up 85 pounds a week of recycling in just a matter of a few months. BACS definitely does recycle more than before and we also can recycle bottles and cans now! It makes me feel accomplished knowing that our class was the first in BACS to have a “blue bin.” I hope that my class and I will keep engaging and growing in this process to make recycling a daily routine not only at Blackstone but in our communities too. The next step I plan on taking is to come up with ideas to increase the recycling in the outside community of Blackstone. |
