Habit of Mind Summary
Habit of Mind Essay
This year, some of my greatest accomplishments were shown in all of my classes. Thankfully, this year was a pretty easy one. I accomplished many things in time, got As and Bs, and satisfied my teachers. There were many things that allowed me to achieve these accomplishments. With the support of teachers and loved ones, I was able to reach my goals.
My greatest struggle this year has been as of right now. I began doing my portfolio work last minute, which has killed me mentally. I am currently dealing with this struggle by setting goals. I put my phone away when I begin doing my work and I set due dates for myself. For example, I’ll have a read-on summary due by tomorrow. If I don’t get it done, I can’t reward myself with some cake or a break to do my nails. This has been going fairly well for me and has been working so far! My main goal for next year is to have all of my portfolio done before June. I feel as if when I get a portfolio worthy rubric, upload it straight to my weebly, so that way towards the end of the year I won’t have all the stress I have right now. To accomplish these goals I will need Grit, Optimism, Self Advocacy, and Organization.
My habit of mind strengths are Collaboration, Humility, Wellness, and Zest. Freshman year, collaboration was my greatest weakness. I did not work well with others, due to my lack of patience. I felt the need to always be the leader that does not listen to others ideas. But, this year, History has helped me fix this problem. I was in a group for my Civil Rights project with two other people who each had rather unique ideas. It was hard to combine all of our ideas into one project, but it was done with LOTS of patience. Since I am an Honor student, I am expected from my teachers to be a good example and leader to my peers. In English class, while we were reading “Night” by Elie Wiesel, Marti chose the honor students of her class to be leaders of small reading groups. I was paired up with a few people who needed more help and attention in the area of books, so because I had to be respectful of each person and accept their level of knowledge, my Humility has grown. I clearly show Zest when I do sports and my father is a chef and I advocate peace. It all adds up together to me being able to maintain a healthy mind, body and soul. Zest was greatly shown in Chemistry class. I noticed my enthusiasm was contagious to other students, creating a domino effect, which made the whole class participate on Monday and Tuesday first period!
The habit of mind that I am currently working on is Community Engagement. I noticed that I am not as active as I could be in the school or local community. I don’t volunteer enough to proudly say that I am an active participator in the community. But, with my upstander project in History, which is a project on an issue I think needs to be fixed and also my service learning project which is linked with Foster Care and a fashion show. Both of these issues will be addressed in the BACS community with a teach in and a fundraiser for Foster Care organizations.
Even though I am beginning to blossom with demonstrating Blackstone’s habits of mind in my classes, I have the rest of Habits of Minds to work on. I need to strongly continue to work on Gratitude. I sometimes tend to keep things bubble inside and kept to myself and I noticed I sometimes don’t appreciate others for one’s opportunities. In order to try and demonstrate this habit of mind next year, I must begin with being more open and honest with people.
